Originally from Anhui in Eastern China, violist Yuchen Lu has garnered international recognition for his unique artistry and virtuosity and for his passionate and musically compelling performances. Mr.Lu recently won the George and Elizabeth Gregory concerto competition. He is the first-prizewinner of the 2021 Irving M. Klein International String Competition, and second prizewinner at the 2019 Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, Mr. Lu has been presented as a soloist with orchestra, recitalist, and chamber musician throughout the world. Recent engagements have included his California debut performing the Bartok Viola Concerto with the Santa Cruz Symphony and a solo recital on the Gualala Arts Chamber Music Series.
Mr. Lu has attended Morningside Music Bridge, the Bowdoin International Music Festival as a fellowship recipient, and Yellow Barn, and was a member of the Seiji Ozawa Orchestra Academy. During the summer of 2022, he was a fellow at the Marlboro Music Festival, performing with artists such as Marcy Rosen, Nobuko Imai, Mitsuko Uchida, Peter Wiley, Hsin-Yun Huang, and Joseph Lin. He has been invited to return to Marlboro in 2024. Mr. Lu studied with Milan Milisavljević at the Mannes school of music for his Professional Studies Diploma. He received his Master of Music degree in May 2022 from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Carol Rodland and currently serves as her teaching assistant. He received his Bachelor of Music degree at the New England Conservatory as a student of Kim Kashkashian. Prior to coming to the United States, Mr. Lu attended the high school affiliated with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Li Sheng.
